Effective weight loss entails hard work and discipline. It requires changes that need to be incorporated in one’s lifestyle to really establish that one is successful in it. Losing weight and gaining it back within a short span of time cannot be considered effective. Long term weight loss is.

There are lots of things that influence weight gain as well as weight loss. One major factor is one’s metabolic activity which is in turn influenced by another set of factors. Genetics, eating and exercise habits, age, gender and the amount of muscles in one’s body all play a role in one’s weight loss efforts. While it is true that genetics play a significant part in weight loss, there are ways to balance out the equation.

Some people have the notion that effective weight loss can be achieved through starvation. It is a logical presumption considering that one gains weight because of over eating. The body however, is complex. It decreases metabolic activity when it senses a lack of food supply. The body’s muscles, which boosts metabolism is compromised. Starvation diets or extreme diets are not sustainable in the long term. Eventually, one returns to his or her regular diet and with it, the pounds that were lost during the severe dieting phase.

Effective weight loss requires one to exercise regularly and a healthy, sensible, nutritional plan. It means getting one’s daily caloric allowance and creating calorie deficits for weight loss through exercise. Maintaining these habits are the two best strategies for weight loss. Effective weight loss is long term and sustainable. In essence, a person who wants to achieve it should change his or her lifestyle to suit the goals he or she has in mind.

Exercising for effective weight loss involves aerobic exercises and strength training. Aerobics, when done properly sheds off fat and weight training boosts metabolic activity. Both work synergistically to enhance weight loss. Though weight training needs some equipment, aerobic exercises don’t require a gym membership. Brisk walking is a great way to do aerobics, as well as jogging, dancing or any activity that raises your heart rate and which one can continuously do for 30 to 40 minutes.

Effective weight loss is all about good health and looking your best. Whatever one’s motivation to do it, achieving effective weight loss requires lifestyle changes that can be maintained for good. It is a challenge but one that provides great rewards for those who are willing to go for it.
